Nenagh LTC’s Deirdre McSherry is the 50+ Irish Masters Singles champion

Deirdre, seeded 2, having won her two earlier rounds, lined out against No. 1 seed Grainne O’Donoghue (Mount Pleasant LTC) in the final during which unfortunately Grainne suffered an injury during the final and had to retire. It was undoubtedly hard luck for Grainne, but in fairness to Deirdre, she did win her way to the final, she has consistent results at this level, and coupled with the oft used phrase ‘you can only play what’s in front of you’ she can take huge satisfaction for winning a deserved Irish title.

Pickleball: Pickleball is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Originating in the United States in the 1960s, it has gained a worldwide following due to its fun and accessible nature. It has been described as a low-impact sport and is considered to be easy on the joints. Enthusiasts says it enhances co-ordination, agility and cardiovascular capacity, characteristics which would seem to make it a very suitable activity for those of us in the ‘senior’ age groups.

The sport is being introduced at Nenagh LTC. The opening session attracted large numbers of people wishing to sample the game, all reporting positively, and the club is continuing the promotion of the new game with further sessions this week, the next one being on this Thursday, 13th June from 9am – 1pm. There’s no need to book, intending participants should just come along. Racquets and balls will be provided.
