Owner of O' Meara's Hotel in Nenagh dies

From The Guardian issue of June 14 1924 comes new of the death of the owner of O' Meara's Hotel in Nenagh - two years after the shooting of his wife in porch of the hotel during The Troubles two years earlier.....

The most sincere regret will be felt through Nenagh and district, as well as by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances at home and abroad at the news of the death of Mr James O’ Meara, The Hotel, Nenagh, which occurred this morning.

Deceased was a long and prominent and popular personality in the town. He was educated at Clongowes, where he was a contemporary and personal friend of the late John Redmond.

A man of fine physical appearance in his early years, he was a useful athlete and a great lover of horse flesh. Indeed, his powers of training and handling horses and dogs was almost uncanny.

He was for many years Chairman of the Nenagh Urban Council after the passing of the Local Government Act but resigned from that body some years ago. He was also a member of the Nenagh Board of Guardians for a lengthy period.

He was Chairman of the Nenagh Show Committee, an event in which he took the keenest interest. He was also prominently associated with the old Race Committee and with the Coursing Club.

The very tragic death of his wife, who was shot dead in the hotel porch two years ago, was an intensely severe blow from which he never really recovered.
