Conservation education event at Redwood NS

The Lorrha Rathcabbin Game & Conservation Club recently hosted an educational event aimed at inspiring the next generation of conservationists by bringing the pupils of Redwood National School to the heart of our local conservation efforts. This hunter-led initiative showcased the club's dedication to wildlife preservation and environmental stewardship, providing the young attendees with a hands-on learning experience.

The pupils were given a guided tour of the area where the club breeds pheasants, Irish Grey Partridge and duck. This up-close encounter with the birds not only fascinated the children but also provided them with a deeper understanding of the importance of breeding programs in conserving native species.

A highlight of the day was the kick sampling of a nearby stream. The children enthusiastically participated in this activity, learning about aquatic ecosystems and the various invertebrates that indicate water quality. This exercise demonstrated the interconnectedness of different habitats and the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems.

The event also included a special activity where the pupils collected pheasant eggs. This hands-on task was a novel experience for many of the children and underscored the critical role of egg collection in the conservation breeding process. It allowed them to witness firsthand the early stages of wildlife management.

Throughout the day, the children encountered a variety of animals, broadening their appreciation for the biodiversity within their parish. From observing the elegant flight of pheasants to learning about the habits of the Irish Grey Partridge, the pupils were introduced to the rich tapestry of local wildlife.

The event was designed not only to educate but to ignite a passion for conservation among the young participants. By exposing them to the meticulous and rewarding work of the Lorrha Rathcabbin Game & Conservation Club, the organisers hope to sow the seeds of interest in conservation and wildlife management.

“This event is crucial in highlighting the excellent conservation work happening in our parish,” said Robert, a representative of the club. “By engaging the children in these activities, we're not just educating them; we're fostering a lifelong interest in preserving our natural heritage. Our hunter-led conservation efforts demonstrate the integral role hunters play in maintaining and enhancing wildlife habitats.”

The Lorrha Rathcabbin Game & Conservation Club continues to play a pivotal role in the local community, promoting sustainable practices and ensuring the protection of local wildlife. Events like these are instrumental in nurturing the next generation of conservationists, ensuring that the passion and commitment to conservation continue to thrive in Lorrha and beyond.
