Funding boost for local attractions

Tipperary County Council has announced the receipt of funding under Fáilte Ireland’s EU Just Transition Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme. Funding has been provided to Castle Street, Roscrea, with plans to develop detailed design and planning for the regeneration of Castle Street. Funding was also awarded to Carrick on Suir Riverside Regeneration Project.

The announcement of capital investment in the development of both Castle Street Roscrea and the Carrick on Suir Riverside Regeneration Projects will enhance the visitor experience and drive tourism in the Tipperary area.

These funded project announcements along with the announcement of €2,976,548 to the Office of Public Works delivery of interpretation upgrade and introduction of new exhibitions within Roscrea Castle, Damer House, Heritage Centre is welcomed product development that will generate significant interest from local, domestic and international tourists to experience these attractions and activities in Tipperary.

Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme aims to transform tourism across eight counties in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and Ireland’s Ancient East by diversifying the local economy and providing new employment opportunities for workers and communities that were heavily dependent on peat. The scheme will develop the midlands into a leading regenerative tourism destination, creating more reasons for domestic and international tourists to visit the Midlands while also sustaining jobs, businesses and local communities in the region. It will also support the transition of the Midlands to a carbon neutral destination through funding of sustainable tourism projects that are designed to have significant regenerative impacts on local communities and peatlands.

Brian Beck, Director of Services Economic, Rural and Community Development at Tipperary County Council, stated: “Tourism is a substantial growth area for County Tipperary. We have so much to offer in terms of beautiful landscapes, rich heritage and cultural stories and the funding awarded to the Castle Street Roscrea Project and the Riverside Regeneration Project in Carrick On Suir through the Fáilte Ireland Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme catalysis further the opportunity to enhance product development for Tipperary increasing its visitor offering to domestic and international visitors.”

Paddy Mathews, Head of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands at Fáilte Ireland, said: “Developing the tourism offering in Tipperary has the potential to transform this county and the wider midlands into a world-class sustainable tourism destination. We look forward to working closely with Tipperary County Council to deliver this project and support the development of regenerative tourism for the benefit of visitors and communities across the region.”

Government TD for North Tipperary, Jackie Cahill, has welcomed the significant funding announced for North Tipperary under the Just Transition Fund today.

He also paid tribute to the efforts of Cllr Michael Smith for working very hard to deliver these resources and funding for Roscrea. “We’ve had a number of meetings with ministerial colleagues, and I’m glad to see the very significant funding that has been awarded to Roscrea town, with over €3.5 million allocated to Roscrea projects.”
