Sadness at Judge Elizabeth MacGrath's passing

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has paid tribute to the late Elizabeth MacGrath, the District Judge in Nenagh, Thurles and Tipperary Town, who sadly passed away on Wednesday last week, July 3.

“It is with great sadness I learned of the untimely death of Judge Elizabeth MacGrath, who has given dedicated service to the State since first appointed to the bench in 2007,” said Minister McEntee.

“From 2012 she has served as District Judge in Tipperary and I know she will be hugely missed by everyone who had the privilege to know her. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to her husband, family and friends on their loss. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”

Labour Party TD Alan Kelly said Judge MacGrath made a huge contribution to life in Tipperary and further afield. “She was extremely knowledgeable in her role as local district judge. She was very reasonable to deal with and always helpful.”

After gardaí, court staff and those working in the legal profession met in Judge MacGrath’s court chamber in Nenagh Courthouse on Friday last to pay tributes, the usual sitting of the District Court was cancelled as a mark of respect. On Monday, the commencement of the monthly meeting of Tipperary County Council was postponed for five minutes. Judge MacGrath was sister to the recently retired Chief Executive Officer Joe MacGrath and current Director of Services in the council, Sharon Kennedy.
