Tipp teens impress in Autocross competition

The first round of the Shannon Trophy's Autocross Championship event was held outside Loughrea last weekend. It was run by the Galway Motor Club.

Conditions were challenging with rain showers throughout the day. William Cavanagh of Modreeny, Cloughjordan, was ahead from the first run and never looked back! William ended up winning the event in his Hayabusa powered special.

Also taking part was his son, William Jnr, and his nephew, Jack Cavanagh, in a new class this year for j1000 spec cars for 13 to 16-year-olds. The two boys were battling it out all day but in the end it was William Jnr in his Nissan Micra who narrowly beat Jack to claim second in class and Jack placing third in class. Not bad for their first day racing on grass. They are both following in their fathers' and grandfathers’ footsteps!

William Cavanagh takes an early lead in the championship going into the next round which takes place next Sunday in Ashbourne, Co Meath.
