Summer party time at Newport nursing home

Residents treated to special celebration

Nearly a quarter of a century after it first opened its doors to service the care of the elderly and convalescent within the local community, the essential facility has been more than doubled in scale.

Last Friday afternoon was Summer Party Time at Millbrae Lodge Nursing Home, Newport, where the residents were treated to party fare, hospitality and entertainment to celebrate the growing success of the home.

Kate O'Brien, Director of Nursing, said how delighted she was to see so many of the residents assembled for their Summer Party and Barbecue and hoped that they would enjoy the afternoon.

She thanked her staff at the home and all who had contributed to the arrangements for the event.

Millbrae Nursing Home, which has 81-bed capacity on two floors, is part of the Emeis Health Care Group of 24 nursing homes stretching from Donegal to Clare, with homes based in the larger Dublin and surrounding area, midlands, west of Ireland and two in Munster.

Emeis Health Care Group were represented by Elaine Keane, Chief Operations Officer; Karla Walsh, Quality Control Officer, and Eddie Harkin, Associate Regional Director, and present also was Dr Pat Moroney, GP, Newport Medical Centre.

Entertainment for the afternoon was provided by talented composer and musician, Pete Creighton and Rev Fr Bobby Fletcher, PP, New Inn and former pastor of Newport.

Millbrae Lodge Nursing Home was established a quarter of a century ago, on a green field site on the Limerick Road, by Seamus and Linda Carew, who later more than doubled the original capacity to the current 81 beds and continued to operate it as one of the highest quality nursing homes in the region until 2019, when it was purchased by the Donegal based, Brindley Health Care Group.

In 2020, French multinational Orpea, a leading European operator in dependency care, acquired a 50% share in Brindley. As a result, BGF exited its first investment in the Republic of Ireland and in 2024, ORPEA became Emeis Health Care Group.

In addition to Millbrae Lodge Nursing Home, the group operates Athlunkard Nursing Home, Corbally, Limerick as the only Munster-based among 24 in the group, with a total of 2,129 beds, and 2,100 employees.
