Speed-carving at the North Tipp Show

Visitors to the North Tipperary Agricultural Show in Nenagh next Monday are in for a truly novel treat with the addition of speed-carving to the attractions.

Renowned wood-carver Paradzai Havatitye will be demonstrating his skills with a chainsaw. He is aiming to craft at least six unique pieces of wood art on the day, three in the morning and three in the afternoon. Each piece will also be coated with oil ahead of being auctioned off to the highest bidder on the day.

Carving out such a number of pieces in such a short time is no mean feat, but it is a challenge relished by Para, who has participated in several international speed-carving competitions in recent years. Carving against the clock with the world's most talented wood-carvers, he was awarded second place in a competition in the UK last year. Para has also made a name for himself in carving cometitions in the US.

Originally from Zimbabwe and based in Roscrea for many years, Para's work can be seen in many parts of Ireland. Locally, he is known for creating the large seat in the grounds of St Mary of the Rosary, Nenagh, which he fashioned from the base of an old maracapana tree. He was also commissioned by the Lakeside Hotel in Ballina to create a series of symbolic sculptures from the stumps of four cedar trees on the hotel grounds.

At the Nenagh show, people will be able to watch Para at work on carvings that he said will most likely have an animal theme, such as an owl, fox or horse head. Everything he makes will be auctioned, and the proceeds will be divided between Nenagh Day Care Centre, Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club's search & recovery service, and the cost of materials.

Para will be carving from around 10am and there are two auctions planned, one at lunch time and a second just before the show ends. Don't miss the North Tipperary Agricultural Show in Nenagh this August Bank Holiday Monday!
