'Worst road in the district'

Tipperary Co Council is to commence repair work this month on a section of road deemed to be the worst in Nenagh Municipal District.

At the district's July meeting, Cllr John Carroll expressed anger over the impasse with repairing the Erinagh-Crannahurt road. He mentioned that the council received a €1.7 million allocation to tackle roads damaged by bad weather last spring. It is "not acceptable" that the route in question has been left in the condition it is.

"Nobody in the constituency can tell me there's a road as bad as Erinagh-Crannahurt," Cllr Carroll said. "That needs to be prioritised with a big P."

District Engineer Barry Murphy agreed that it is "the worst road in the district". An allocation of €162,000 was made but the condition of the road is worse than anticipated. A geo-technical assessment is required ahead of a full reconstruction.

Mr Murphy said a likely timescale for starting the work would be the end of August. "If we take a short cut, it will come back to haunt us," he warned.
