Daniel Mulhall

Exploring art and politics in Clough’

The organisers of the Thomas MacDonagh Hedge School are delighted that Daniel Mulhall, author and former diplomat, will give the keynote address to open the Hedge School 2024.

The theme for this year’s programme is inspired by MacDonagh’s central role in the arts and politics of his time, evident in his work as contributor and editor of The Irish Review during its brief run (1911 – 1914). As a career diplomat, a scholar and man of letters, Daniel Mulhall's address will draw on all of these elements as he explores art and politics, and its trajectory from MacDonagh's time to the present day.

This event will take place at 11am Saturday, September 21, in Cloughjordan.

Dan Mulhall retired from the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in August 2022 following an eminent 44 year career as a diplomat. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1978 with early diplomatic assignments in New Delhi, Vienna (OSCE), Brussels, and Edinburgh; he contributed to the historic Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland in 1998; and he went on to serve as Ireland’s Ambassador to Malaysia (2001–2005), Germany (2009–2013), and the United Kingdom (2013–2017), during the referendum on Brexit, before taking up a position as Ambassador of Ireland to the United States in Washington in August 2017. He is a consultant with the global law firm DLA Piper and Honorary President of the Yeats Society, Sligo.
