Silvermines find Cashel defence in mean mood

Silvermines fell to their second successive narrow defeat in the County Senior Camogie Championship when Cashel King Cormacs left Dolla with full points on Saturday.

CAMOGIE: FBD Insurance Tipperary Senior Championship Group 1 Round 2

Silvermines 0-9

Cashel King Cormacs 0-12

The home were in search of a much needed victory having lost their opening game to Shannon Rovers while Cashel were hoping to get their campaign off to a winning start having had a bye in the first round.

With sixteen minutes gone in the second half, Cashel held a slender one point lead, 0-10 to 0-9, but unfortunately for Silvermines they failed to score for the remainder of the game as Cashel added two more to their tally for a three point win.

While the Silvermines defence did well, especially Miriam Murphy and Katie Murphy, while Aisling Carey also pulled off a great save in the first half, but at the other end they were over reliant on frees from Ellen Cunneen. In fact, all their second half scores came from well struck frees from Ellen.

In the first half, Ciara Ryan was very strong in midfield scoring two points while Niamh Cunneen got Silvermines second point after ten minutes.

Cashel had the greater spread of scorers with Hannah Butler, Anna Fahie (2 frees), Ciara Dwan, Philly Fogarty and Caoimhe Perdue all getting on the scoresheet.

In defence, Sorcha Ryan was on top while Meabh Ellie Ryan and Una O’Dwyer were very good in the full back line.

At half time, Cashel led 0-6 to 0-5 but an Ellen Cunneen free within seconds of the restart had the sides tied again and it was score for score until the 46th minute when the scores dried up for the ‘Mines who failed to score in the final quarter.

This was despite good passages of play from Sarah Madden and Ellen & Niamh Cunneen in the Silvermines attack but with Ella O’Dwyer in fine form also in the Cashel defence, they struggled to create further scoring opportunities and ultimately nine points in an hour of camogie wasn’t going to be enough.
