Big successes for Nenagh and Puckane in Munster Tennis Finals

These weeks are proving truly memorable for Nenagh LTC in Munster Tennis circles. The club has seven teams appearing in 2024 Munster Summer Cup finals, four of which took place in Sunday’s Well on Sunday, and the remaining three are scheduled to take place next Saturday.

Nenagh were successful in three of those finals on Sunday. The Grade 3 Mixed team of Mary Slattery (Capt), Pauline Ryan, Owen Geaney & Damien Egan defeated Ballinlough and the Grade 4 Mixed team of David Minogue, John Minogue, Margaret Slattery, & Emma O’Connor defeated Bandon.

The third Nenagh win was in the Grade 6 Mixed final in which the team of Niall Madden, John O’Brien, Majella O’Dwyer, & Edyta Iskra overcame the stern resilience of neighbours Puckane.

Unfortunately, the Grade 5 mixed team of Marie Moylan, Sile McDonnell, Kevin Dooley & Tadhg Corley was out luck in its final against Kinsale, losing 2/3, courtesy of the dreaded ‘super-doubles’ decider.

There will be a more comprehensive report on these finals next week as well as reports on Nenagh’s other three finals against Ballypatrick (Grade 3 Ladies), against Causeway (Grade 6 Ladies) and against Bishopstown (Novice Mixed).

Puckane & District Tennis Club which won the Grade 2 Ladies’ and Grade 3 Men’s titles and were finalists in Grade 6 Mixed, thereby adding to club’s already high reputation in Munster tennis circles.

Future Security President’s Prize: The annual ‘Future Security’ President’s Prize took place at Nenagh LTC recently over three very enjoyable nights of tennis and banter.

The President’s Prize is a long established event which honours the sitting President, currently George McGrath. There was a very big entry across the separate ladies’ and men’s doubles events, and we saw some new and old faces ascent the podium.

At the presentation, President George McGrath thanked John O’Shaughnessy of ‘Future Security’ who generously sponsored the tennis and the many who participated in the occasion either as players or by their attendance.

He thanked the many who brought along cakes, etc, the organisers, including Anne Fitzpatrick and Margaret Folan, and his wife Sally and other family members who have always supported him in his various roles within the club.

Helena Darcy, a winner on the night, speaking on behalf of the players and members, thanked George for his massive contribution to the development of the club over many years as treasurer and which contribution continues today in his role as president.

ITF Irish Masters Close Championships 30-50: This national weekend event was run by the Munster Branch at Nenagh last weekend and attracted many high ranking Irish veteran players.

The good standard of tennis on view and good weather made for some enjoyable matches.

A number of locals participated and the success of the Darcy sisters, Helena & Anne-Marie in the ladies 35+ doubles final was a notable achievement. Anne-Marie was also a finalist in the equivalent singles event.

Deirdre McSherry was again to the fore, being a finalist in both ladies 50 singles and doubles events, coming particularly close (9/11 in the championship tie-break) in the doubles.

Slattery Tiles Senior Club Week: begins on Sunday, 8th September. There’s a big entry and the club will doubtless be a busy place throughout the week. All the details are on the tournament website.
