Countdown to MacDonagh Hedge School
The second annual Thomas MacDonagh Hedge School (September 18-22) is nearly upon us and the event organisers and volunteers are busy making the final preparations to welcome our guest speakers, artists and workshop providers to Cloughjordan.
On Culture Night, Friday, September 20, in an exhibition entitled The Irish Review – Creative Responses, curated by artist Melissa Ryan, contemporary artworks by twenty professional and amateur members of the North Tipperary Artists’ Collective will be on show at the museum.
In addition, 15 writers who attended our creative writing workshop hosted by author and poet David McLoghlin, will read their new work inspired writers, poets and artists featured in the editions of The Irish Review in the Museum’s collection. The theme for this year’s programme is inspired by MacDonagh’s central role in the arts and politics of his time, evident in his work as contributor and editor of The Irish Review during its brief run (1911 – 1914). In a series of talks throughout the day on Saturday September 21, writers and scholars Daniel Mulhall, Fergal Keane, Sarah Moore Fitzgerald, Catherine Wilsdon, Billy Shortall and Róisín Kennedy will present their views on Ireland, the arts and politics.

On Sunday, September 22, from 2-3pm, Dr Róisín Kennedy, Lecturer in the School of Art History and Cultural Policy at UCD will give a talk on the Harry Clarke stained glass window in St Michael and St John church in Cloughjordan. Dr Kennedy will discuss the artist, his life, his work and his style and share her insights into this significant, local cultural asset. This event is free, but you must register to attend.
