Dan McCormack retires from Inter-County Hurling

By Shane Brophy

Tipperary senior hurler Dan McCormack has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling.

The Borris-Ileigh clubman has been part of the panel for ten years and leaves with 2 All-Ireland medals won in 2016 and 2019 as a combative half-forward who was ultra-reliable and also very adaptable as he was equally comfortable in midfield and half-back lines.

He made his championship debut against Cork in 2016 and from there was part of a Tipperary match-day panel for all 42 championship games since, making 40 championship appearances, and was an unused sub twice (both in 2024) scoring 1-16, the goal coming against Limerick in 2020.

“After careful consideration and reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to announce my retirement from inter county hurling with the Tipperary senior hurling team,” he said in a statement this morning.

“Since joining the panel in 2015 it has been a huge honour to represent Tipperary and I will always cherish the time I got to wear the blue and gold at the highest possible level.

“Firstly, and most importantly I want to sincerely thank my wife Edwina and family especially my parents, John & Patricia, for their continuous encouragement and support throughout my inter-county career.

“I will forever be indebted to my club Borris-Ileigh who played a crucial role in my career from a young age. I look forward to giving back as much as I can in the coming years.

“I'd like to thank the Principal and my fellow staff members of St. Joseph's College, Borrisoleigh, who facilitated me in any way they could during my time playing with Tipperary.

“I also want to thank all the managers and backroom teams who helped me along this journey and were very supportive of me as well as the Tipperary County Board and Tipperary Supporters Club. Thanks also to the Tipperary supporters who I have always been so proud to represent.

“I would like to thank all the players I played with, and I feel unbelievably lucky to have shared a dressing-room with some of the best Tipperary have ever produced. More importantly, I have made lifelong friendships and shared fantastic memories along the way.

“Finally, I wish Tipperary all the very best for 2025. I have no doubt that the players and management will give their all to bring success back to Tipperary over the next number of years and I look forward to supporting them along the journey.”

Underage

Prior to his senior career, McCormack first lined out for Tipperary as a member of the minor team in 2009 when they fell to Waterford in the Munster Final and was also a minor a year later.

McCormack was drafted onto the Tipperary under-21 team in advance of the 2012 Championship and played at midfield when Tipperary suffered a 1-16 to 1-14 defeat by Clare in the Munster final. McCormack was an unused substitute for the 2013 final defeat to 2013 and was eligible for the under-21 grade for a third successive season in 2014 where scored two points from wing-forward in a 5-19 to 1-25 extra-time defeat by Clare in the Munster semi-final

McCormack was added to the Tipperary senior panel in advance of the 2015 National League and was an unused substitute throughout. He was selected on the bench when Tipperary faced Waterford in the Munster final but ended with the first of his two Munster Championship medals.

The second came the following year when McCormack made his first appearance for the Tipperary senior team when he lined out at right wing-forward in a 1-23 to 0-12 defeat of Dublin in the National League, going onto make his championship debut against Cork later in the year.

Thanks

Tipperary GAA also thanked Dan McCormack for his commitment throughout the course of his inter-county career and for the positive impact he has had on all those around him during that time.

Dan proved to be an integral part of every panel he was a member of and the contribution he made on each occasion he put on a Tipperary jersey was immense. He has represented himself, his club and his county with distinction and we wish him the very best for his future endeavours.
