A values-based education setting
Nenagh College hosted their annual Open Night on Wednesday last, October 23.
The huge crowd in attendance received information during the principal's address to inform parents and prospective students about life in Nenagh College.
Principal, Mr Damien Kennedy, highlighted the successful pathways for students from the school, with graduates accepted into courses in a wide array of colleges including Trinity College, University of Limerick, ATU, TUS, University of Galway and many more. Graduates moving to apprenticeships and further education further emphasised the eclectic nature of opportunities available in the school.
Digressing from the academic success of the student, the address concentrated on the pastoral supports that the students can avail of in school, with access to on-site counselling, class directors for First Years, year heads throughout the student's journey, peer support groups all in a values based-education setting.
As the only device school in the town the principal outlined the value the parents receive when purchasing the devices for their children.
There are partnerships with Wriggle, the device providers, and a strong relationship between the school and Nenagh Credit Union to provide financing for the device.
Most parents were pleasantly surprised to see that €4.48 per week for the initial three years represented excellent value.
Principal Kennedy emphasised the convenience for the students who have an ever-increasing reliance on computers to research and submit projects and coursework. With the changes to Junior Certificate complete and the Senior Cycle review about to begin this reliance will only increase and place more pressure on the computer rooms in the school.
In Nenagh College every room is a computer room when students have their own devices. With the projected expansion of the book support grant from the Department of Education, students will be supplied with a hard copy book to facilitate studying at home and an e book on their device for school.
Among the many advantages of the device is the number of books that students have to carry. School bag weight has long been a concern for parents, with devices and e-books the student's load is considerably lighter.
ENROLMENT DEADLINE
Parents and students visited the many specialists room and facilities after the Principal's address with the evening concluding with refreshments in the school canteen.
Many enrolments were taken on the night, with the principal reminding parents that the enrolment window closes on November 13.
