Birdhill awarded another bronze
Former National Tidy Towns winner, Birdhill has been awarded another bronze medal at the 2024 SuperValu Tidy Towns awards announced last Friday.
The multiple national and European award winning village over the past two decades was awarded an additional nine points to a total for 2024 of 372 points in the results for the year, announced at a special gala ceremony in Croke Park.
Birdhill was placed second in the county in Category A, qualifying for a bronze medal, a few marks behind Terryglass. The village has received several bronze and silver medals over the years and were the overall winners in 2017.The village received an increased score in seven of the eight categories in the contest and maintained last year's score in the other category.
The judge who visited Birdhill on June 12 commented: “Thank you for the opportunity to visit your village and see all your wonderful work. You are doing a great job supporting the natural surroundings and making Birdhill a beautiful place to live. Keep up the good work.”
Six locations in the area competed in the 2024 contest. Shallee received the largest increase of 14 points to a total of 295, while the next highest to Birdhill was Killoscully with an increase of 11 points bringing their total to 362 points.
Both Shallee and Killoscully received an increase in points under all headings.
Of his visit to the village in early June the judge “was really impressed with the presentation of your village and the surrounds and the work the committee has carried out. It is no surprise that Killoscully receives many compliments from those fortunate enough to visit this beautiful place.”
Of his visit to Shallee, the judge commented: “I really enjoyed my visit to Shallee. The peace and tranquility of the lovely area was very pleasant indeed.”
Newport and Toor were each awarded an extra 12 points to bring their respective scores to 313 and 322, while Ballinahinch gained 10 points to a score of 326.
Each of the locations were commended by the judge for the level of work which they are putting into making their locations more beautiful and they were urged to “keep up the good work they are doing!”
