Seventh heaven for Nenagh as they go national
SOCCER: FAI Junior Cup 3rd Round
Nenagh AFC 7
Newport Town 1
Report: Pat Sheehan
Nenagh AFC will represent the Limerick District League in the open draw stages of the FAI Junior Cup following their 7-1 win over rivals Newport Town in this third round tie in Brickfields on Sunday.
When the draw was made and pitted the two Tipperary rivals it was always expected to be a close encounter with little between the sides. However, Newport had the misfortune to meet a Nenagh side who, once they recovered from an early set back, turned in their best display of the season.
Nenagh have been playing very well but have been conceding soft goals at crucial times.
When Newport took the lead on fourteen minutes through Christy Doyle, the home side must have felt “here we go again”.
However, the concession seemed to spark Nenagh into life. They were back on level terms on the half hour mark when Dylan Morrison squared to Mattie O’Gorman to tap home from close range.
Before half time, Nenagh took charge when a cross from Said Ryan was controlled and finished to the bottom corner by Morrison.
Any hopes of a Newport comeback were thwarted two minutes after the restart when Nathan Kelly cut inside and curled a fine effort into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.
With the home side now firmly in control they hit a ten-minute purple patch twenty minutes from time, running in four goals without reply.
An excellent run by Cillian Scully ended when he picked out Dylan Morrison to slot home. Mike O’Gorman curled an effort from 25 yards out into the bottom corner to make it 5-1.
Scully made an excellent breakaway from a Newport corner, played a one-two with Dan O’Meara and before finishing and the final nail in the Newport coffin saw Dan O'Meara finish with a 20-yard effort.
