Junior 'A' Football: Well done to Kiladangan who completed a three-in-a-row of North Junior 'A' Football titles last Saturday in Puckane after a hard fought 0-11 to 2-4 victory over Shannon Rovers.
Under 21 'A' Hurling Championship: There were victories for both Silvermines and Borris-Ileigh in last Sunday's semi-finals. Silvermines had a 1-14 to 1-13 victory over Ballina whilst Borris-Ileigh defeated Nenagh Eire Og 2-16 to 1-13. The Final takes place this Sunday, 17th November at 2.00pm in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh.
Under 21 'B' Hurling Championship: Burgess and Newport will face off in the North U21 'B' Hurling Final after their semi-final victories last Sunday.
Burgess had a 3-18 to 0-25 extra time victory over Moneygall/Clonakenny whilst Newport defeated Kilruane MacDonaghs 2-17 to 1-19 in Cloughjordan.
It was their brilliant start that made the difference; they were 0-5 to 0-1 in front after nine minutes with Cillian Collins their main man with three points. It was 0-8 to 0-3 after twenty minutes as Newport continued to dominate with Collins and Diarmuid O’Riordan on target while Kilruane’s Rory Grace and Michael Cleary denied by two great saves by goalkeeper Ryan Shinners.
Newport’s lead increased to 0-11 to 0-4 with 25 minutes gone thanks to scores by Collins, Poole and O’Riordan. Heading into the last five minutes of the half, Michael Cleary scored twice while Jack Mulcahy and Brian O’Meara scored from play to see the deficit down to four, 0-12 0-8.
Kilruane emerged a different team in the second half and points by Michael Cleary, Carroll and Mulcahy had them one shy of the visitors. Then in the 40th Newport replied on the break with Cillian Collins finishing to the net from close range after Kilruane keeper Kevin Naughnane had initially denied Shane Flanagan.
But Kilruane came again, and three Michael Cleary scores had the home-side one shy. However, the visitors breached the Kilruane cover again with a second goal from Cillian Collins.
Kilruane had to regroup again and points by Brian O’Meara and Michael Cleary had them three in arrears by the 53rd minute. Another Collins free kept Newport safe but a well struck sideline ball was flicked overhead to the Newport net by Sean Hayes.
The excitement had reached fever pitch as Kilruane came in search of a winning goal, but Collins stretched his tally to 2-11 with an insurance free. It was deep into added time and Kilruane won a close range free, and Michael Cleary elected to go for the point in the hope there would be enough time for one more score which never materialised.
The final between Burgess and Newport takes place in Dolla next Sunday, 17th November at 12.00pm.
