All Tipp schools progress to Harty Cup knockout stages

GAA: TUS Munster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘A’ Hurling – Dr Harty Cup Review

Our Lady’s SS, Templemore 0-16 Castletroy College 1-10

Our Lady’s Secondary School, Templemore joined the Nenagh CBS and Thurles CBS in the knockout stage of the Dr Harty Cup after seeing off Castletroy College in Toomevara last Wednesday.

This was a winner-takes-all contest to see who joined Ardscoil Ris from the group, and it developed into a shootout between Our Lady’s Paudie O’Shea and Castletroy’s Matthew Fitzgerald who between them accounted for seventeen points, sixteen from placed balls.

In the end, the stronger Templemore side got the verdict, with wing forward Jack Marnell the key player, finishing with three points from play in a man of the match performance.

Templemore led 0-8 to 0-5 at half time and with Joey Quinn and Philly O’Dwyer hitting third quarter points, it gave the Tipperary side an eight point advantage, but Castletroy fought back over the final fifteen minutes outscoring their opponents 1-4 to 0-2.

Barry Griffin gave the Limerick side a boost with a solo goal on 48 minutes when he won possession out on the stand side and wormed his way goalwards before firing a low shot past Cormac Bourke. Robert O’Farrell hit two, to cut the deficit to three, but in the end Our Lady’s held out and advance to the preliminary quarter finals.

Our Lady’s SS, Templemore: Cormac Bourke (JK Brackens); Tommy Burke (JK Brackens), Ned Delaney (JK Brackens), Darragh Hoare (Drom & Inch), Mark Conroy (Drom & Inch 0-1), Cormac Cahill (Drom & Inch), Shay Gleeson (Moneygall), Billy Collier (JK Brackens), Cian Broderick (JK Brackens), Jack Marnell (JK Brackens 0-3), Joey Quinn (Loughmore/Castleiney 0-1), Sean Stapleton (Clonakenny), Philly O’Dwyer (Upperchurch/Drombane 0-1), Padraic O’Shea (JK Brackens 0-10, 9f), Chris Dunne (Gortnahoe/Glengoole). Subs: Richie Morris (Loughmore/Castleiney) for Stapleton (50), Kieran Martin (JK Brackens) for C Broderick (60+2).

As a group runner-up, Our Lady’s will progress to a preliminary quarter final next month, as will both Thurles CBS and defending champions Nenagh CBS. Both schools were idle last week as they had a bye, however, the outcome of the games in their groups saw them both finishing in the runners-up spots.

In Group 4, following their draw with Midleton CBS in round 1, Nenagh recorded a 21 point win over St Francis’ College Rochestown in round 2 which set a target for Midleton in the final game of the group, and they bettered it with a 6-20 to 0-13 point win to progress straight to the quarter finals.

Thurles CBS were held to a draw by St Flannan’s College Ennis in round 1 of Group 5 before having thirteen points to spare over Tralee CBS in their second game but the Clare were 3-29 to 0-7 winners over the first-timers from Kerry to finish top of the group on score difference.

Tipperary’s remaining representative Cashel Community School have already booked a place in the knockout stage ahead of their final group game against Blackwater Community School Lismore which was played yesterday (Tuesday) with no result at the time of going to print, where a win for the 2023 winners would see them directly through to the quarter finals in January.

The winners of the three groups with four teams qualified for the quarter-finals in the New Year – namely Group 1 winner - CBC Cork, Group 2 winner - Ardscoil Rís Limerick and the winner of Group 3 (Blackwater Community School Lismore or Cashel Community School who play next Tuesday).

As per the competition regulations, the fourth confirmed quarter-final place was determined by a draw between the winners of the groups with 3 teams (Group 4 winner – CBS Midleton, Group 5 winner - De La Salle College or Group 6 winner - St. Flannan’s College Ennis). That draw took place on Thursday with CBS Midleton being selected as the fourth quarter-finalist. De La Salle College and St. Flannan’s College will play in the Preliminary Quarter-Finals as a result.

The Preliminary Quarter-Final draw will take place next Tuesday evening after the remaining Group 3 game between Blackwater Community School Lismore and Cashel Community School with repeat pairings being avoided.

The teams involved in the Preliminary Quarter-Final draw are as follows:

Group 5 winner - De La Salle College

Group 6 winner - St. Flannan’s College Ennis

Group 1 runner-up – John the Baptist Community School

Group 2 runner-up – Our Lady’s SS Templemore
