Minister at Portumna Community School
Minister for Education Norma Foley visited Portumna Community School recently, accompanied by local public representatives, Minister of State at the Department of Health and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Anne Rabbitte TD and Galway County Councillor Ivan Canning.
Minister Foley received a warm welcome from Leaving Certificate students, Kate Hardiman and Niall Duggan and enjoyed a tour of classrooms led by head boy and head girl, Kian Claffey and Esme Duane. During the tour Minister Foley had the opportunity to meet with a number of students and staff discussing subject practical's, exam preparation and topics from the extensive range of subjects on offer. She also visited the ASD class ‘An Cuan’ spending time with students and examining a display of students’ work.
Following the tour, the school choir welcomed the minister with a rendition of ‘Fix You’ by Coldplay as she made her way to a whole school assembly. The minister addressed the school, highlighting the hard work of the pupils, staff and the entire school community in showcasing such a wonderful, hardworking school. She also complimented the recent and ongoing developments and the advancement of the schools building project.
The visit concluded with the raising of the Bí Cineálta Flag, which symbolises our school wide commitment to prevent and address bullying behaviour. The flag was raised in conjunction with representatives from the student council, Sixth Year prefects and class captains.
