Spy cameras for illegal dump sites in Tipperary

Spy cameras are to be erected at illegal dumping blackspots throughout Tipperary in a bid to catch the culprits responsible.

Tipperary County Council Director, Eamon Lonergan, informed elected members at their December meeting that the local authority was currently in talks with companies who supplied such cameras. It was hoped to have some of these cameras in place at dumping blackspots early in the new year.

Cllr John Carroll urged that culprits dumping large volumes of rubbish be prosecuted under the Waste Management Act rather than the Litter Act.

Doing so would mean offenders would face fines of €5,000, or more, rather than the much smaller fines that applied under the Litter Act.

Council Director Eamon Lonergan said the council was taking action against offenders. Three prosecutions that the local authority had issued under the Waste Management Act were due for hearing in Clonmel Circuit Court in the current month.
