The crumbling Military Barracks today was being considered for a housing scheme exactly 100 years ago this month

New housing for Nenagh's Military Barracks?

While the authorities deliberate over a future possible use for Nenagh's crumbling Military Barracks, it has emerged that they were also grappling with the same issue exactly 100 years ago this month. Here's a report from our archives of December 1924 indicating that the buildings was being thought of for providing much needed housing for the citizens of the town all those years ago..................

Mr Dan Morrissey, TD, Nenagh, wrote to Nenagh Urban District Council informing councillors of the following: “I have been in communication with the Ministry for Defence and the Office of Public Works with a view to getting the military barracks handed to the council for housing purposes.  It this can be done it will be a great boon to the town, for I believe we could accommodate 40 to 50 families there.

“The Commissioners for Public Works have written to the Army Authorities, asking them whether they will require the barracks again. If not, the Commissioners are prepared to give them to the council at a rent to be fixed. It will be necessary for the council to pass a resolution requesting the barracks be handed over, and send  copies to the Ministry of Defence and the Board of Works.”

Mr Morrissey was confident  of the co-operation  of the council in this matter.

Mr J. Flannery proposed a resolution requesting the Board of Works to hand over the barracks for tenement housing. Mr McLoughlin seconded, and said it would be a very good thing for the town if they succeeded in getting the barracks.
