Councillors complain over performance of Uisce Éireann in Tipperary

A CALL has been made to take away responsibility for the provision of water infrastructure in County Tipperary from Uisce Éireann and restore it to the county council.

A motion on the issue was adopted by elected members at the December meeting of the council.

A separate motion was also adopted calling on Uisce Éireann to have greater communication with local councillors seeking to resolve problems throughout the county.

Cllr David Dunne said the county council no longer had responsibility for water infrastructure, which now rested with Uisce Éireann. He said one of the problems with this transfer of responsibility was that Uisce Éireann just could not be held to account by elected members in Tipperary.

Because of this there were major issues with water infrastructure all over the county.

Cllr Niall Dennehy said the transfer of responsibilities to Uisce Éireann had “proven to be a nightmare”.

Of the company’s performance in Tipperary, Cllr Liam Browne declared: “We cannot get anything out of them.”

He urged the company to nominate a member of its staff to be a point of contact with elected representatives seeking to resolve problems in communities all over the county.
