Pádraig’s book launch in Cork

SONGSMITH: Picturing the Pogue, Shane MacGowan, by Pádraig Ó Flannabhra continues its nationwide tour with another successful launch in Cork.

Cork City Library hosted the launch for the book, with Cork City executive librarian, Margaret O'Sullivan, presiding. Ms O'Sullivan introduced the Lord Mayor Cllr Dan Boyle, who was the special guest at the launch and spoke about the book's content, noting especially its Tipperary inclusion in all three sections from 1986 to 2023.

He recalled the only time he saw Shane MacGowan was at an anti-war protest held in Dublin, over the war in Afghanistan, where the frontman of the Pogues appeared from the balcony of a window in Dame Street in solidarity with the protestors.

A question and answer session followed the talk and video presentation, ‘A Pogue in Pocán’, by the photographer Pádraig Ó Flannabhra. The event was well attended with some Nenagh folk turning out in support of the launch, which was in support of UNICEF - the children's charity, especially the children of Palestine and the Gaza strip.

Following on from the book's Cork City launch, the book received a pre-Christmas boost nationwide, when it featured on a live interview with the photographer on RTÉ's Radio1 ‘Liveline’ Show with broadcaster, Joe Duffy.
