Nenagh enjoys festive shopping bonanza
Nenagh was booming during the Christmas shopping season, say local councillors, who have praised the local authority and the Chamber of Commerce for the efforts made to generate bumper business in the town.
Speaking at the recent meeting of the Nenagh Municipal District, the District Administrator Rosemary Joyce said the festivities funded by Tipperary County Council in association with the Nenagh & District Chamber of Commerce to create a festive atmosphere and draw crowds to the town had been a huge success.
The official turning on of the Christmas lights brought large number to the town centre on December 1 and there was a real buzz around town in the days leading up to the holiday season itself.
The fun and entertainment hosted in the castle, despite the inclement weather, was a big success, with Santa proving popular with all the children who visited.
Cllr Joe Hannigan said Nenagh was now a very vibrant town. All the efforts by the council and the chamber of commerce to attract increased footfall in the town over the past several years were really paying off now.
“People are travelling from far and wide to do their shopping here,” he said.
Cllr Louise Morgan Walsh said the town was looking fantastic, and the number of people coming to do their shopping was increasing all the time. “The work done by Rosemary Joyce and her team has been great for the town. You could really feel the buzz, and it made Christmas really great.”
Cllr John Carroll said one of the highlights was the Nenagh Tractors Parade organised by Albert Purcell and his team.
Ms Joyce said the festivities in Nenagh were extra special and had, just as in previous years, captured national media attention. A film crew and presenter from Ireland AM had visited to do a slot on the town for national television.
Cllr JP O’ Meara said all of the festive glitz and glamour on show to attract people to the town was backboned by the new one-way traffic system in the town centre. Traffic flowed smoothly, even when car numbers reached their peak at the heights of the shopping season.
Cllr Pamela Quirke concurred with what others had said, describing the way the town looked as “fantastic” over the festive season.
