New lakeshore amenity to enhance services in Dromineer
A CONTRACTOR is set to be appointed in February to build a new watersports activity centre in Dromineer, councillors of the Nenagh Muncipal District were informed at their December meeting.
The new centre will replace the old public toilet building on the lakeshore. That building is set to be demolished and the new Fáilte Ireland funded centre built in its place.
Planning for the new centre has been a few years in the pipeline, but Nenagh District Administrator Rosemary Joyce said a contractor was finally due to be appointed next month.
The centre will provide hot shower, changing and toilet facilities along with secure storage, induction spaces, equipment washdown and orientation points.
It will cater for the significant increase in people enjoying outdoor water-based activities such as kayaking, paddle-boarding and open water swimming.
In 2021, Dromineer was among 22 locations around the country to be included in a €19 million water-based activities plan announced by Fáilte Ireland.
Back then it was expected the works could take around 10 months to complete.
It had been hoped to start the works within months of the announcement of the plan, but due to the Covid Pandemic and other issues it has dragged on.
Speaking at the recent municipal meeting, Cllr Joe Hannigan urged the council to provide toilet and shower facilities in the old public toilet building pending the start of the works on the new facility.
He said there was a lot of water sport and swimming activity going on in Dromineer currently and water users needed sanitary facilities.
Ms Joyce said the power to the old toilets had been knocked off to pave the way for the works on the new facility.
She said Portaloos would be provided by the council in the Spring, if needed, while the works on the new amenity were taking place.
Council Director Liam Brett said the council would work with water users to see what interim sanitary facilities could be provided pending the completion of the works.
