Rural graveyards in the Nenagh District are filling up
Rural graveyards throughout the Nenagh Municipal District are beginning to fill up, according to Cllr John Carroll.
He said it is now time that the local council started to extend or look at finding new burial grounds.
Speaking at the January meeting of the Nenagh district, he said capacity issues in a number of council-owned graveyards was a problem that was approaching “very fast”. It was now time for the local authority to start dealing with the issue.
Cllr Michael O’ Meara supported Cllr Carroll in relation to imminent capacity problems. He also called on the council to increase grants paid to local burial ground committees who, he felt, did great work in maintaining burial sites on a voluntary basis.
Cllr Carroll said the community spirit of such committees was tremendous and he supported the call to increase the amount of the grant aid.
Michael Moroney, senior executive officer in the council’s environment section, said increasing the grants would be looked at as part of next year’s council budget.
