Allianz Hurling & Football Leagues

Our senior hurlers travelled to the TUS Gaelic Grounds last Sunday to play Limerick in Round 3 of the Allianz League division 1A, and while the result may have gone the way of the hosts (0-30 to 1-23), Tipperary will be pleased with many aspects of their performance while also knowing that they have lots of areas where they can and will improve in. See match report and reaction on pages 77-80.

Next up for our senior hurlers is a clash with Cork in FBD Semple Stadium on Saturday February 22nd at 7.30pm, in a double-header with the senior footballers who play London at 5.00pm.

Our senior footballers enjoyed a weekend off last weekend as they prepare to play Waterford this Saturday at 6.30pm in Fraher Field, Dungarvan in round 3 of the Allianz National League division 4.

Having secured three points from a possible four in their opening two games, Philly Ryan’s men will be hoping to secure another two points from this game. However, as all Tipperary football supporters will know, victories against our neighbours are very hard earned.

Tickets for Allianz League Games

Supporters are once again reminded that tickets for all Allianz League games must be purchased either online or in selected Centra and Supervalu stores as tickets will not be on sale at any venue. Supporters are also reminded that there will be no Tap & Go in operation at match venues and as is the GAA’s policy for all competitions, no cash will be taken at the turnstiles. Supporters are asked to plan their trip well in advance of each game and this should include making sure that you have your tickets purchased before departing for the game.

GAA Hurling Team of the Week

Congratulations to Sean Kenneally and Michael Breen who were both chosen on the GAA Hurling Team of the week on the back of their very impressive performances in last weekend’s Allianz League game against Limerick.

Leinster Minor Football League

Well done to the Tipperary Minor Footballers who overcame a very strong Wicklow side 2-9 to 3-5 in the Leinster League last Saturday afternoon.

Post Primary Schools

Congratulations to Cashel Community School who were crowned Munster Under 19 ‘B’ Football champions following their 1-8 to 1-5 win over Coláiste na Sceilge, Caherciveen last Saturday.

This was a controlled and measured performance from Cashel Community School, under the stewardship of Robert Costigan and Paddy Carroll, as they collected the Corn Dhonncha Uí Nuanáin after doing enough to see off their opponents in a game played in Ballyagran. This contest was kept alive right to the final whistle by the Kerry side, but they’d left themselves too much to do against a strong and athletic Cashel outfit.

Cashel Community School follow in the footsteps of fellow Tipperary school, Abbey CBS, who won this competition in both 2022 and 2023, and now progress to an All-Ireland semi-final.

Cashel CS: Evan O’Neill (Cashel King Cormacs); Adam Tobin (Clonmel Óg), Cian Lonergan (Golden Kilfeacle), Tom O’Driscoll (Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams); Colm Ryan (Cashel King Cormacs), Noah O’Flynn (Fethard), Seamus Kennedy (Clonoulty/Rossmore); Shane Cooney (Clerihan), Charlie Walsh (Fethard 0-2f); Harry Fogarty (Golden Kilfeacle), Sam Hall (Golden Kilfeacle, Capt, 0-3, 1f), Rory O’Mahony (Fethard 0-1); Niall Hallissey (Cashel King Cormacs 1-0), Colin Bourke (Rosegreen), Ryan O’Sullivan (Clerihan 0-2). Subs: Charlie Hall (Golden-Kilfeacle) for Fogarty (43); Briain O’Donoghue (Cashel King Cormacs) for O’Sullivan (52); William Colville (Rosegreen) for Bourke (52); Brian Gleeson (Boherlahan-Dulla) for S Hall (57).

Best of luck to St Mary’s Secondary School Newport two take on Scoil Ide & Mhuire Newcastle West in the Munster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘C’ Hurling final in Kilmallock this Saturday at 12 noon.

Newport will look to add the ‘C’ title to the ‘D’ grade won last year and join Thurles CBS (A), HS Clonmel (B) and Colaiste Phobal Roscrea (D) as winners of the Senior schools hurling competitions in Munster this year.

Munster Club Junior ‘B’ Football

Best of luck to Burgess who take on Beale from Kerry in the semi-final of the Munster Junior ‘B’ Football competition, this Sunday in Ballyagran at 2.00pm.

The North Tipp club will be hoping to secure another memorable win that would see them into the final where they would play either Goleen of Cork or Limerick side St. Kierans.

Munster Club Junior ‘B’ Hurling

Hard luck to Cappawhite who were narrowly defeated by Kildimo-Pallaskenry from Limerick, 3-8 to 1-13, in the Munster Club Junior ‘B’ Hurling final last Saturday in Raheenagh.

Condolences

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of former All-Ireland winning Galway hurler Michael Coleman last weekend.

He was one of Galway's greatest ever players, representing his County with distinction from Minor all the way up to Senior level.

The winner of an All-Ireland medal at Under 21 in 1983, he went on to play an integral role at midfield when Galway retained the All-Ireland Senior title against Tipperary in 1988.

Michael was also a very proud Abbeyknockmoy man and played a major role in many memorable victories down through the years, none more so than when they captured the County Senior Hurling title in 1988.

Tipperary GAA extends our deepest sympathies to Michael's wife Mary, daughter Sinead and son Dara, his extended family, the Abbeyknockmoy Hurling club, his local community and the Galway County Board at this very difficult time.

We also extend our sincere sympathies to the family of former Dublin football great, Paddy Cullen who has also passed away. During a glittering career, Paddy won three All-Ireland medals, six Leinster Championships, two National Football Leagues, and four All-Stars. He also took charge of the Dublin senior footballers between 1990 and 1992, winning Leinster and National League titles.

Tipperary GAA send our condolences to Paddy’s wife Ann, his family, former teammates, friends, and the Dublin County Board at this sad time.

GAA establish Ethics and Integrity Commission

GAA Ard Stiúrthóir, Tom Ryan, revealed in his Annual Report which was published last week, that the Association has established an Ethics and Integrity Commission.

This Commission will provide advice to Association units and members in relation to matters of ethics and integrity.

“Our clubs and members increasingly encounter situations which stretch the limits of our responsibility, or which are not governed by our rules,” wrote Ryan in his Annual Report.

“Quite often these are situations which were never envisaged. Clearly where there are gaps in our rules we will amend them accordingly, but not every eventuality can – or should - be legislated for.

“Not having a rule doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have a position. That is why we have constituted an Ethics and Integrity Commission.

“This body will assess any issue concerning ethical standards or integrity in relation to Association activity, which do not fall within the remit of the standard disciplinary process.

“It will also engage in education, research, investigation, and the provision of advice in relation to matters of ethics and integrity.
