Bursary award for aspiring Spielbergs

Catalyst International Film Festival is thrilled to announce the return of its esteemed Short Documentary Bursary Award for a second consecutive year.

As the festival enters its sixth edition in Limerick City April 3-5, this initiative reaffirms Catalyst’s commitment to championing underrepresented voices in filmmaking, a significant achievement for a grassroots festival dedicated to fostering inclusivity in the screen industry.

“The Catalyst Bursary made it possible for me to collaborate with an incredible crew and bring my vision to life in a way I never could have alone,” said Nicola Leddy, director of Boobs (2024’s Bursary Award Winner) “As my debut funded short film, this is a crucial calling card—proof of what I can accomplish with the right support.”

Launched in 2024, the €10,000 Award was created to support emerging and early career documentary filmmakers from diverse backgrounds, providing financial assistance to help develop their projects and ca-reers. Open to Irish-based filmmakers in ROI and NI, the award aligns with the festival’s mission to promote Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion both on and off the screen.

DEADLINE OF MARCH 11

Deadline for submissions is fast approaching on March 11 - and entry is completely free of charge.

Festival Director and Founder Dr. Susan Liddy expressed her enthusiasm for the award’s return: "For a small festival, continuing to offer this bursary is no small feat—but it’s absolutely vital. Catalyst exists to amplify voices that are too often unheard in the film industry. By providing this support, we’re not just acknowledging tal-ent—we’re actively helping to break down barriers and create opportunities. We’re immensely proud to be able to do this for a second year."

Since its inception, Catalyst International Film Festival has carved out a distinctive place in the Irish film land-scape, showcasing films that challenge perspectives and celebrate a broad spectrum of storytelling.

The Bursary Award underscores the festival’s dedication to meaningful change, ensuring that new and diverse voices are nurtured and empowered. Applications for the 2025 Bursary Award will open soon, with details available on the festival’s website. As Catalyst gears up for its sixth edition from 3rd to 5th April 2025, in ven-ues across Limerick City, the festival team looks forward to another year of compelling stories, inspiring tal-ent, and fostering a more inclusive film industry.
