Historical lecture in Killoran
The Arra Historical & Archaeological Society invite you to an evening celebrating ‘The Slate Quarrying Heritage of Castletownarra’ on Tuesday, April 1, in Killoran Community Hall at 8pm.
For over three centuries, slate quarrying has been a significant part of the Castletownarra area’s history. Killoran National School, originally established to serve the children of quarry workers is a fitting venue for this event.
The evening will highlight the rich history of quarrying in the region, explore the various uses of the quarried slate and feature an interview with local Jim Ryan who worked in the quarry. Local man John Hogan will demonstrate the traditional method of splitting slate to create roof slates.
Members and non-members welcome; admission free for members and €5 for non-members.
