Morris questions dumping of waste from Wicklow at landfill near Toomevara
Issues around a move to allow a substantial volume of waste to be disposed in a landfill in the parish of Toomevara have been questioned this week by Nenagh Independent councillor, Séamie Morris.
Cllr Morris has sent a written question to Tipperary County Council, the owners of the landfill at Ballyveny, seeking information in relation to a contract to dispose of 29,000 tonnes of waste a year from Wicklow to the landfill over the next three years.
“Can I ask if the local community has been informed, or indeed the local councillors, and why not?” writes Cllr Morris in his correspondence to the council.
Cllr Morris said the local community should receive payment through a “community gain fund” for the inconvenience of having the landfill opened to take waste from Wicklow.
A similar scheme operated in the locality in the past after locals raised concerns in relation to “traffic safety and nuisance” arising from lorries transporting waste to the site.
