Quid Game fundraiser success

Portroe GAA Club hosts well-supported event

Since last November, Portroe GAA Club has been busy promoting the Quid Game fundraiser, which proved to be a great success when it took place in the Abbey Court Hotel on February 22.

The event was officially launched in Seymour’s Bar, Portroe on January 10 and 36 contestants put their names forward to participate in this fundraiser.

Quid Game is a relatively new concept whereby contestants compete in a series of physical and technical games on stage with the last five games being elimination rounds. The competition results in a single winner who takes away a top prize of €10,000 with €7,000 of this being guaranteed to go to a charity of the winning contestants choosing.

Kieran McKeogh was the winning contestant on the night, and his chosen charity, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland, received €7,000 thanks to Kieran’s great efforts. It also needs to be acknowledged that Kieran donated a further €500 from his winnings to the Portroe GAA Emerging Players Programme, and the club are very thankful to Kieran for this wonderful gesture.

To be eligible to enter the competition each contestant raised €1,800 however none of our contestants stopped at that with our top fundraiser being Bill O’Brien who raised over €7,300. Bill and the remaining top five fundraisers received golden tickets which allowed them to progress through to round three before being considered for elimination.

Any contestant that raised over €2,500 saw their charity receive €300 regardless of how the contestant performed in the event. This saw a further €5,700 being given to various charities as we had 19 contestants that raised over €2,500 each in the lead up to the fundraiser.

The fundraising initiative was finalised with a presentation night in Larkin’s, Garrykennedy where the winning contestant and all those that raised over €2,500 were presented with their cheques. Many stories were shared about how close each participant was to winning but for “that bit of hard luck” that they had. But in the end a massive cheer was given to Kieran McKeogh when he was awarded his prize. All agreed he was a very worthy winner. Kieran was the second highest fundraiser, bringing in over €5,000 in the lead up to the event.

As well as giving almost €16,000 in prize money and charitable donations, Portroe GAA Club also raised €67,000 for its development fund. It is hoped that the monies raised will help complete development works currently underway, and also allow work to begin on a new car park facility planned for the club.

THANKS

Portroe GAA Club would like to thank the Quid Game Committee who worked so hard to make this event a success and would like to acknowledge each contestant who volunteered for this event. It is not an easy task to reach out to people and ask for money, so many thanks.

Portroe GAA Club would also like to acknowledge our sponsors that have supported our contestants and club strongly for this fundraiser, in particular our four main sponsors, Danny Flynn Plant Hire & Groundworks, Abbey Court Hotel & Leisure Centre, Killaloe Whiskey Company and the Nenagh Guardian/Guardian Print.
