Death of Killaloe Man

One of Killaloe’s oldest inhabitants, Mr Michael Buckley, passed away at the ripe age of 84 on Sunday last. He was one of the fine old type of Irishmen, beloved by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance - a kind and affectionate father, a genial friend, honest, upright and straightforward. The late Mr Buckley was a servant of the Grand Canal Company for close on half a century and for a number of years was the company’s agent in Killaloe. He also represented Messrs. A. Guinness, Son & Co. A most loyal or conscientious servant an employer could have.

The chief mourners were Lawerence and William (sons), Bridget and Mary (daughters), Declan and Owen Buckley (grandsons), Annie Buckley Dublin (niece), Jas and Noel Buckley and Misses Kate and Kitty Buckley.

Funeral of Nenagh Man

The funeral of the late Mr Michael Cooney, Graces’ Street, Nenagh, took place on Sunday from St. Mary’s of the Rosary to Lisboney cemetery, and was exceedingly large, testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held. Beautiful wreaths were sent by Mrs Cooney (mother), Ned, Jack (brothers), Lily and Bridget (sisters), Patrick and Maggie O’ Brien (uncle and aunt), Rockfort; Mr Martin Maher, Tomlough (uncle), Minnie Kelly, Rockfort; Mrs Ellard and family; L. P. Gleeson, solicitor, Martin Flanagan, J. Minnitt, E. Anderston and Staff at The Garage, Summerhhill, Mrs Brandon, Church Road. The last prayers at the graveside were read by Rev. Fr O’ Halloran, CC.

Mrs Cooney desires to return sincere thanks to all kind friends who sympathised with her in her sad affliction on the death of her dear son.

Departure from Killaloe

The departure of Mr Peadar McCarthy, Killaloe, for the USA has caused widespread regret, and his loss to Irish Ireland circles is greatly deplored.

Peadar was one of those upright uncompromising characters, whom to know was to respect. Possessed of a fund of rich humour, he had the happy knack of saving awkward situations by a wholly unexpected but very apt remark which invariably had the effect of restoring good humour.

He was a rock of sense in an emergency, for, as his co-workers in the Gaelic Revival Movement were wont to put it, he could never let you down. We wish him all the success and happiness in the land of his adoption which he so well merits.

On the eve of his departure for the USA, Peadar was presented with a gold medal in recognition of his services as a member of the Killaloe Irish Class Dramatic Troupe.

In the course of a supper given in his honour, the presentation was made by Rev Martin Moloney on behalf of the members of the Troupe. Speaking in Irish, Fr Moloney congratulated Peadar on the great work he had helped to accomplish on behalf of the Irish Language movement, and on the realistic manner in which he had filled the various roles in the many bilingual plays staged by the Troupe.

A short Ceilidh followed. Songs were contributed by Messrs T. Rafferty, D. Lynch, M. Corbett, Wm Collins, Wm O’ Brien, T. Shannon, T. Reidy and the Misses N. Rice, D. Corbett, E. Rice, R. Lynch, K. Birch and G. Gleeson.

Tipperary Defeat Cork

All Ireland under 21 hurling champions, Tipperary, cleared their first hurdle in their efforts to retain the title when they defeated Cork by 3-5 to 2-4 in the first round of the Munster Championship at Killdorrery on Sunday.

Tipperary enjoyed less than half the opportunities of Cork, but they led 2-4 to 0-2 against the sun and a difficult cross-wind at the end of the first half. Their second goal came after the selectors shifted “Babs” Keating in on the “mark” temporarily seven minutes before the interval.

Tipperary’s full-back line of Willie Smith, Noel O’ Gorman and Mike O’ Meara were in wonderful form and never looked like being seriously troubled by Cork’s frontline.

Cork took most of the breaks around the middle, where P. J. Ryan and Gerry Quinlan worked hard for Tipperary, while Len Gaynor, their left-half back, also struck very good form.

“Babs” Keating was held rather well by John O’ Keeffe of UCC, while the Tipp senior was on the “forty” - he started there and ended there - and Sean Carroll, who began at left-half and was moved to the right-corner forward position, showed speed and precision of a type Cork could well have done with.

The Tipperary team comprised: S. Shinnors, Newport; W. Smith, Clonakenny; N. O’ Gorman, Newport; M. O’ Meara, Lorrha; O. Killoran, Roscrea; J. Dermody, Cashel; L. Gaynor, Kilruane; P. J. Ryan, Carrick; G. Quinlan, Éire Óg Nenagh; F. Loughnane, Roscrea; M. Keating, Grange; S. Carroll, Roscrea; D. Bourke, Fethard; T. J. Butler, Clonoulty; P. Ryan, Moneygall.

Scorers for Tipperary: S. Carroll, 2-1; M. Keating, 1-1; D. Bourke, 0-1, F. Loughnane, 0-1 and L. Gaynor, 0-1.
