Creating fashion from waste

Students at a second level school have shown their imagination and creativity in the world of fashion with a difference through which shone their designing and dressmaking skills.

The international Junk Kouture culture encourages young people to identify the potential of all types of common waste to create fashionable outfits.

The annual Junk Kouture fashion show at St Mary's Secondary School, Newport, presented an amazing collection of outfits created from waste.

The skills of the students to turn waste materials into such remarkably colourful and attractive outfits is a tribute to the endless hours which inevitably was necessary to achieve their objective with such perfection.

The organisers of the fashion show at the school explained: “The aim of the event is to highlight the presence of fast fashion culture in our society in today's world. The students in the Junk Kouture class have been designing and making their costumes from recyclable materials since the beginning of the year and this was their chance to showcase these to their peers in school.”

The judges this year were Leslie Ryan (parent representative), Laura Droog (teacher representative), Emma Hogan (student art teacher in LSAD) and Layla Caplis (student representative and winner of last year's competition).

The judges were unanimous on their decision of the winners being Chloe Power and Leah Wixted with their Tetra pack carton costume. The girls received a small cash prize and were delighted with the win.

SWAP SHOP

In conjunction with the fashion show a swap shop was held at the school.

This event was organised by the TY Art class with teacher Ms McGauley and TY GCE (Global Citizenship Education) class with teacher Ms Caffrey.

The GCE class organised the swap shop element to the event. Students and teachers were asked to donate pre-loved clothing and accessories in exchange for entry to the fashion show.

While the judges were deliberating on the winner of the fashion show event, the students were given the opportunity to shop and take part in a sustainability quiz.
