Tipperary suffered their second heavy loss to Cork in the space of three weeks as an early red card to Darragh McCarthy made an already tough challenge insurmountable in Sunday’s Munster Senior Hurling Championship round 2 clash on Sunday.
Tipp were forced into one change before the throw-in with Joe Caesar ruled out through injury with Conor Bowe coming in at wing forward with Sam O’Farrell dropping to his more accustomed position of wing back.
However, that wasn’t the only set-back prior to the start as Darragh McCarthy was sent off inside a minute for an off the ball incident with Sean O’Donoghue. An Alan Tynan point was strangely ruled out by the referee as it had taken place before the incident with Tipp effectively playing the entire game with fourteen men.
And within six minutes Cork made the extra man count as Tim O’Mahony came onto a Brian Hayes centre before beating Barry Hogan as his near post.
With Cork having the extra man, they were always able to find the extra man on puckouts, but Tipp were never able to put enough pressure on to force dispossessions with Patrick Horgan goaling on thirteen minutes and Alan Connolly four minutes later for a 3-6 to 0-3 lead.
It had the potential to be another record loss for Tipp against Cork, but they stemmed the bleeding up to half time to trail 3-13 to 0-12 with Jason Forde and Jake Morris doing the lions share of the scoring while Sam O’Farrell had a goal chance well saved by Patrick Collins.
Tipp’s effort throughout never waned and fifteen minutes into the second half they had eaten into the lead but never threatened a goal to put Cork under pressure and a Declan Dalton goal on 64 minutes sealed the win for Cork who went onto record a twelve point victory.
With Clare losing to Waterford, Tipp and Clare clash next in Ennis on Saturday week in what will be a decisive clash in the race for place in the top three.
