General Election in spring?
A General Election is looming closer with punters backing the chances on one taking place as early as February 2020.
The support comes after the Government put in an order for 3.5 million ballot papers with printers being told to have them ready for February 1st, ahead of a possible vote later that month. The chances of the election taking place between January – March next year is now 11/8 from 4/1 with BoyleSports while April – June is 5/4 from 2/1.
Following the recent vote in the UK which is expected to result in Brexit by the end of January, the Taoiseach will be eager to set a date under the Electoral Act. It’s therefore a short 1/20 for the country to go to the polls in 2020 while it’s 8/1 from 6/1 to happen in 2021 or later.
Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Following the government putting in a large order for ballot papers to be ready for the start of February, punters have gone mad backing the general election to take place between January and March next year. Leo Varadkar will be eager to get a date set in place with Brexit looking imminent, but a vote between April and June is still the slight favourite at 5/4.”
