Nenagh team, runners-up to Rushbrooke in the Munster Senior Tennis Cup final on Sunday last: L-R: David Hackett, Lena O'Connor, Anne-Marie Darcy and Frank O'Keeffe

Nenagh teams gallant efforts fall just short

An heroic effort by Nenagh in the Munster Senior Cup final in Rushbrooke, Cobh on Sunday came up just short of delivering a third title when the home Rushbrooke team won 3/2 to claim its 26th title.

It was two matches all going into the Men’s Doubles but Frank O’Keeffe & David Hackett came out on the wrong side of an exciting three set match, losing 4/6. Earlier, the Nenagh pairings of Lena O’Connor & Anne-Marie Darcy and Lena O’Connor & David Hackett had recorded wins. The Nenagh team was Frank O’Keeffe, David Hackett, Lena O’Connor and Anne-Marie Darcy.

The senior cup was only one of many finals on Sunday, with Nenagh involved in two other finals but had to be content with the runner-up position in both. The Grade 5 Mixed team lost 2/3 to Dromahane. The ‘super-doubles’, which is used when a four match fixture is tied at two-all, decided the winner, with Dromahane defeating a gallant Nenagh team of Denis Ley, Gary Parsons, Emma Kearns and Siobhan Corcoran.

A similarly gallant effort by the Nenagh Grade 6 ladies team of Mary Gavin, Brid Morgan, Elaine Kelly and Margot Coghlan was unsuccessful against a good Tralee team in the final.
