A walk in the park is the best way to describe this victory for Newport as they firmly taught Silvermines a lesson in a huge win in this Seamus O Riain Cup quarter final on Sunday afternoon.

Total dominance from Newport from the very first whistle put paid to a Silvermines side that were bereft of ideas from an early stage, as they registered a paltry score as their forwards offered nothing in response to the Newport onslaught.

Davy Shanahan was the only player that could come away with his pride intact, as only for a number of high class stops from the ‘Mines net-minder, the score-line could have made for even worse reading at the final whistle as he denied Daniel Carew and Colin Floyd from point blank range late in the second half.

The ‘Mines look like a team that are badly in need of an infusion of some of the talented underage teams coming along as the bulk of the successful team that won Intermediate County and Munster honours in 2012 are coming towards the end, and it told on Sunday as they ran into a Newport team in exceptional form.

Joe Quaid has them playing some serious hurling and the results so far have shown that they are serious title contenders and they have a really settled looking team with the likes of Sean O’Brien, Conor O’Mahony and Odhran & Colin Floyd providing a very experienced spine to the team and they are producing the goods at the moment.

Particularly, the move of O’Brien to centre-forward looks to be a fine move by management as he linked up play excellently early on to get the Newport forward line in motion, setting up a point for Daniel Carew in the sixth minute, before sending a pinpoint cross-field ball to Colin Floyd who never broke stride to prance in on goal to finish and give his side a fantastic start as they lead 1-3 to no score after ten minutes.

Orrie Quirke pointed from a dead-ball a minute later to get the ‘Mines off the mark but the early signs were very ominous as Newport were playing some silky hurling, Colin Floyd in particular was continuing to cause Ronan Sherlock huge problems and he added a lovely point from play after two Darragh Carroll frees to ratchet up the pressure on the ‘Mines who had to respond before the game got away from them, as they really weren’t asking many questions of Newport.

They got into a little bit of stride before the water break with points from Paudie Fogarty and Bryan Seymour, but Newport were continuing to look dangerous and had two more scores themselves, again from Colin Floyd and a Carroll free. Davy Shanahan kept his side in it with a really smart save from Colin Floyd who had left Ronan Sherlock for dust after winning a high ball as his shot was deflected over the crossbar for a point.

Conor McKelvey slotted over a lovely point a minute later and this was added to by Ruairi Maher after good work from Seymour as the ‘Mines had a mini-purple patch between the 20th & 23rd minutes, but Newport weren’t letting up as they registered seven unanswered points in the remaining minutes of the half; Peter O’Sullivan with a brace of beautiful long range efforts the pick of them as they took a healthy 1-15 to 0-6 lead to the break.

To illustrate the Newport dominance, Silvermines made a treble substitution at the break in the hope they could mount a good second half and ask more questions of Newport but this didn’t materialise as the Mulcair men, if anything, upped the intensity further and points in the first five minutes from Martin Carey, Darragh Carroll (2 frees) and Pa Ryan extended the lead to what was now an unassailable seventeen points after 36 minutes.

Jason Forde tried to rouse his teammates with a monster score a few minutes later, however, the ‘Mines were a beaten team all over and they were in damage control now with a big chunk of time left to play. Shanahan again was doing his part as he first denied Carew from close range after lovely interplay by the Newport forwards, before he somehow rejected Colin Floyd again one-on-one as they poured the pressure on the Silvermines defence.

While the goals were being denied, this didn’t stop the Newport lead growing, as they were playing some exhibition stuff now with the scores coming from all over; Martin Carey with his second along with further scores from Carroll, Conor Floyd and Cian Flanagan putting a comprehensive and deserved gloss on the scoreboard for Newport.

Only Mark Daniels and Oisin Murphy managed to get on the scoreboard thereafter, as they registered just the second and third scores respectively for the ‘Mines who had no answer for their opponents for a finish.

The ‘Mines misery was compounded further just two minutes from time when Darragh McKelvey was given his marching orders for a second bookable offense as they were firmly put the sword by their north neighbours, who now advance for a semi-final date and re-match with Mullinahone next weekend.
