Silvermines senior hurling campaign ended in high drama on Sunday when they lost by a point to Mullinahone in the quarter-final of the Seamus O Riain Cup.

After a disappointing opening half during which they struggled to impose themselves on the game, Silvermines were trailing 1-13 to 0-7 at half-time. Nothing seemed to be going right for them. Bad enough that they were 0-13 to 0-7 behind coming to the break but on the stroke of half-time they conceded a goal to Martin Kehoe leaving them with a mountain to climb on the resumption.

With their campaign petering out before their eyes a drastic change in approach was required. Jason Forde, who had started at midfield, moved back to centre back and Ronan Sherlock moved from defence to lead the attack, switches that energised the Silvermines challenge but it was two strokes of good fortune that really galvanised them.

Six minutes into the second half, Jason Forde’s well-struck free from midway somehow ended up in the Mullinahone net and was followed by points from Forde and Oisin Murphy to cut the lead to six.
