Newport march on in Cup competitions

Limerick District League Review

Newport Town 'A' travelled to North Cork on Saturday to play Charleville in round 2 of the Munster Junior Cup and progressed to the third round following an extra time success.

Both teams were on a decent run of form and with Charleville having won the earlier league encounter on a 4-1 scoreline, this was always going to be a tough task.

The game turned out to be a very even contest between two good sides. Both teams scored in the first half to leave it 1-1 at half-time. Paul Ryan continued his impressive goal scoring run with the Newport goal.

Newport took the lead in the second half thanks to a goal from captain, Brian O’Sullivan. However, Charleville equalised to make it 2-2 and brought the game to extra-time.

For the second game running, substitute Jake Dillon came off the bench to score to make it 3-2. Newport were reduced to ten men with five minutes remaining when Seán Ryan was sent off for a second yellow card offence but they dug deep to hold on for a great win.

Newport will be away to the winners of Aisling Annacotty v Fairview Rangers 'B' in the next round.
