Roscrea band to play in Thurles

Formed in 2012, Roscrea Band The Winter Passing are Ireland’s newest export.

Over the years, Ireland has produced some incredibly fine music and it’s easy to forget just how good some of the bands have been: Indie-pop darlings The Cranberries are still going strong, and back in the day when megastars U2 were really good, they were great. While The Winter Passing may not share much in common with the aforementioned bands in terms of sound, they have the same hard-working ethos.

The desire to get noticed over the last couple of years has clearly paid off for this young indie-rock band, enough to win them a US record deal and live profile. Edgy yet melodious, their indie-tinged pop-punk is packed with hooks and heart. Dueling vocals between brother and sister Rob and Kate Flynn add a whole other dimension to the group’s sound and sets them apart from their similarly sounding peers.  Between the two, they add a dynamic and dramatic element to their songs.

There’s genuine emotion, anger and passion, a winning combination in anyone’s book, yet with a clear sense of self at the same time. The Winter Passing are striding across this particular musical tightrope with ease. It all started with a trickle but is now approaching a deluge. Bands from this little corner of the world are currently doing a fine job Stateside and these Roscrea natives are on the cusp of something spectacular.
