379 present as homeless in Tipperary

A total of 379 people presented as homeless

in County Tipperary in 2016.

Of these, 157 were under the age of 25 (73 male and 84 female), 112 were aged between 26 and 35 (54 males and 58 females) and 110 were aged between 36 and 60 (58 males, 52 females).

Tipperary Co Council assisted these persons in a number of ways, including the offer of local authority/voluntary housing, approving persons for private rented accommodation, and provision of hostel/B&B accommodation.

The figures are included in the council's draft annual report for 2016, which details the establishment of a local Homeless Action Team (HAT) to care for people presenting as homeless. The HAT is a multidisciplined approach, meeting weekly with representatives of various service providers including the local authority, HSE, mental health services, Novas and the Dept of Social Protection.

Temporary B&Bs can be made available in an emergency, pending the sourcing of private rented accommodation/social housing. Inter-county protocols have been established in the South East region in relation to access to regional hostels for persons presenting as homeless in Tipperary.
