Kiladangan’s bid for the first leg of a county double came unstuck on Saturday as their intermediate hurlers slumped in the closing minutes in the face of a fierce Sean Treacys onslaught, the West boys hitting 1-3 without reply to clinch their first title at this level since their 1966 success in the then County No 1 Junior Championship.

It was a frustrating outcome for the North champions who overcame a disastrous opening ten minutes to lead at half time, and then looked to be into a winning position only to concede a third goal three minutes from time, which ultimately led to their downfall.

Torrential rain forced the transfer of this game from Littleton to Bansha and full marks to the Galtee Rovers club who had their venue in perfect order despite such short notice. The change of venue did not deter a large gathering and they were treated to a full-blooded encounter that could have gone either way.

Ultimately, it was Treacys’ greater determination which carried the day but a livelier pitch could have seen Kiladangan prevail.
