Call for speed ramps in Newport and Cloughjordan
Calls have been made for the installation of speed ramps in Cloughjordan and Newport, despite Tipperary Co Council’s reluctance to resort to such measures.
At the recent meeting of Nenagh Municipal District, Cllr Séamie Morris (Ind) recalled having a motion passed for speed ramps on Cloughjordan’s Templemore Road. He said local people had signed a petition seeking ramps for the busy road and sought an update on the situation.
Director Marcus O’Connor said the council had passed a policy that regards speed ramps as a “last resort”. The council is generally opposed to such measures because they cause difficulties for emergency services, among other problems. While the council would have a look at the Cloughjordan situation, speeding is an issue for the gardaí, he said.
Cllr John Rocky McGrath (Ind) spoke of a similar problem with traffic speeding in Newport. Ramps, flashing signs or some other form of traffic calming would have to be considered. “It’s madness what’s going on there,” Cllr McGrath said.
