Burgess claimed their first ever County Senior Hurling title when they came from behind to defeat Moycarkey/Borris in the Seamus O’Riain Cup final last Sunday.
Playing in front their loyal support which included members of the Burgess 1993 County Intermediate final winning squad who were celebrating their 25th anniversary, it took a Donagh Maher score in injury time to secure victory.
Maher had moved to midfield in the last quarter and the move proved beneficial in a performance which was below par for a Burgess outfit where their forward line never got into their stride and needed a steadfast defence of Maher along with Jack Flaherty and Shane Maher impressed, the latter immense at full back and deservedly won the man of the match award.
Scores were level four times in the opening thirty minutes in a very poor spectacle where nerves and poor touch dominated. Burgess played with the stiff breeze in that opening half but were very wasteful in shooting nine wides as opposed to four for Moycarkey.
