Nenagh Triathlon Club gears up for premier event
NENAGH Triathlon Club have launched a series of events in building up to the North Tipp Sprint Triathlon, Ireland's first National Series race of 2016, which will take place on Saturday April 16th.
'Club Week', the local tri club's main event of the year, began last Monday, April 11th, with a sports nutrition seminar at Nenagh Leisure Centre. Tuesday, April 12th, will see the beginning of this season's cycling time trial league. Then on Wednesday, the club's popular run series gets underway.
These events are geared towards encouraging people to get involved in the sport of triathlon. They will be particularly beneficial to anyone participating in the Nenagh Lions Club 'Try-a-Tri' event on June 11th.
The bike time trials will take place every Tuesday and will involve various distances between 10 and 35k. The six-week run series involves entrants attempting to predict their times over 3-5k routes, with prizes for those who guess to the nearest second. Entry is by donation of a few euro and proceeds will be given to local causes.
Nenagh Triathlon Club is actively supporting the June 11th 'Tri-a-Try' and welcomes all to come and watch the North Tipp Sprint this Saturday, 16th of April. The National Series event – also part of the National Inter-varsity Championships – will see some 300 triathletes from all over Ireland competing in the 750m swim/20k bike/5k run race. The swim will take place at Nenagh Leisure Centre, the cycle route is out to Toomevara and back, while the run takes participants out the Dublin road, onto the Cloughjordan road, around Rathnaleen and back to the CBS by the Old Birr Road.
Thirty local entrants will compete in the race, among them Nenagh man Darren Dunne. Nineteen-year old Darren is widely regarded as one of Ireland's greatest emerging talents in triathlon. A member of Ireland's development squad and an athlete in almost full-time training, Darren will be among the favourites in his hometown race.
This will be the seventh North Tipp Sprint triathlon held by the local club, which was founded in 2007 and has around 100 members (ranging from complete novice to elite level) along with Nenagh Cycling Club. Note that roads will be marshalled but not closed for the Saturday event.
Nenagh Triathlon Club hopes to organise more events over the coming months including a Dromineer triathlon on July 9th. See www.nenaghtriathlonclub.com for more.
