Perfect Ten in Laurels opener

TRAPRISE

The classic action comes thick and fast this autumn and the elite racers of the sport made their way to Curraheen Park in Cork last weekend for the commencement of the 2019 Irish Laurels.

The 525-yard annual is the sole remaining original classic of greyhound racing which is yet to be claimed by trainer Pat Guilfoyle but on a circuit which can ideally accommodate the astounding abilities of Grangeview Ten, the kennels laid down a huge marker on Saturday as the Produce Stakes champ went fastest in the opening round!

Widely endorsed as one of the hottest renewals in the modern era, Lorrha owner Michael Hogan again finds himself with realistic claims of classic success for the blistering early pace of Grangeview Ten (Zero Ten/Portumna West) was the outstanding feature of the Saturday action as he eclipsed all despite producing just a moderate start in Heat 7.

Briefly headed in the early exchanges, he was afforded racing room from a Trap 4 berth which is fast becoming his favoured draw but he would quickly overturn his deficit when streaking to the front once in full stride. Left to his own devices, his devasting early dash simply can’t be matched and when turning with over a length to spare, the heat was as good as settled. Bounding clear to halfway, Grangeview Ten reduced a hot heat to a virtual procession when registering a five-length verdict over Allaghaun River in a sublime 28.00 (+10).

The Laurels will be a tough five-round campaign and like all the early pacers in the event, securing clear passage through the rounds will be essential for progression. However, much like Clonmel in his Produce Stakes victory, the Cork venue can see Grangeview Ten at his absolute best and it may not be premature to again become excited at the prospect of local classic success.
