Mary Dreaming of final glory at Limerick
TRAPRISE
Destined to be a very special runner on the local racing scene, Martin Kennedy’s Our Marys Dream made a wonderful debut at Limerick on Saturday when claiming victory in her semi-final of the Retired Greyhound Trust ON3 525-yard Stake, sparking an emotional reaction from friends and family while named in honour of a much missed figure from our greyhound community.
The untimely passing of Mary Kennedy in April of this year was a huge blow to all connected with a Kennedy family who are the essence of true sporting participation at every level within the local racing scene and bearing a very special name, this poignant success brings precious memories to the forefront while also carving the early strides of a renewed racing campaign in the face of adversity.
A March 2018 pup, Our Marys Dream (Ballymac Vic/Donals Tank) lined-up in what can prove a tricky Trap 6 for debut runners but breaking on terms, she would display superior early dash than her rivals and despite a gradual drift towards the middle of the track on the run to the opening bend, began to ease clear approaching the corner.
Turning with just over a length in hand, the Kennedy charge impressed with a smooth gallop to the back-straight while skipping clear to a near four length advantage. Well in command to halfway, she would have her deficit reduced only slightly before reaching the closing bends but would find a strong staying rival drawing ever closer entering the home stretch. Straightening for the line with little more than a length to spare, Our Marys Dream was never for passing however and displaying pleasing resolve, defended that same one length advantage to the line for an uncomplicated debut victory in 29.44.
