McCarthy hoping that experience counts in Tipp's favour

Whether she’s donning a Tipperary jersey or a Western Bulldogs guernsey (a term used to refer to the sleeveless top worn by players in Australian Rules), Aisling McCarthy plays by the same set of principles – relentless work-ethic, intelligence in possession, and nerveless composure when the pressure starts to bite.

The 23-year-old has been on a remarkable journey over the past couple of years, helping to land All-Ireland titles at both club, with Cahir, and county level, before her sporting career steered into new territory down in the southern hemisphere.

The opportunity to spend a season playing Australian Rules with Melbourne club Western Bulldogs was one which the Cahir physiotherapist relished, and she’ll have the chance to build on that experience in the coming months, which she travels down under for her second season, accompanied by a new AFLW rookie – Tipperary teammate Orla O'Dwyer who is heading to Brisbane.

The experience in Australia was enlightening for McCarthy, benefiting both her personal and sporting development. It was a dive into the unknown, and as much as her love has grown for Australian Rules, gaelic games still has those unique elements of community and local loyalty.

I suppose it’s just a totally different environment,” she revealed.
