Nenagh Golf Club hosted the prestigious Munster Ladies Golf Cup last August and ended up as winners for the second time in three years.
The team of Deirdre Cahalan, Catherine Bird and captain Teresa Starr won with a score of 231 adding to Nenagh's most recent success in 2018.
The competition has been played for every year since 1932 in what is a Team of 3 format for players with a handicap of 20 or under and 34 teams from all over Munster travelled to Nenagh for the competition.
“We were hosting the event, so we were under pressure,” said Munster Cup winning captain Teresa Starr.
“It was the final year the cup is being presented as the ILGU (Irish Ladies Golf Union) no longer exists and combines now into Golf Ireland.”
A week later, Nenagh Golf Club Ladies also won the Eleanor Tivy Cup in Adare Manor. The winning team were Marie Corrigan, Margaret Hennessy, and Kathryn Dolan with a combined nett score of 102 seeing off 39 other clubs in the province.
2021 Lady Captain Marese Dolan Hutchinson said it was a one hundred percent record for ladies’ teams in the club last year as they were the only two competitions entered because of Covid and hopes it will inspire more women to take up the game when golf clubs reopen later this month.
“We can’t wait, there will be a rush for the first tee,” she said.
“We have a charter to boost women in golf and we have a programme we weren’t able to do last year for new golfers.”
